A sudden storm in southwestern China has led to the deaths of nine people after four boats capsized on the Wu River in Guizhou province, according to reports from Chinese state media on Monday. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when an unexpected burst of rain, wind, and hail struck the river, a tributary of the Yangtze, the longest river in China. More than 80 individuals were thrown into the river when the storm hit, prompting an extensive rescue operation.

As of Monday morning, nine fatalities have been confirmed and one person remains missing. Search and rescue efforts are continuing under the coordination of local authorities. State media stated that the boats were operating in a scenic area known for tourist activity. Early assessments had indicated that two boats were involved, but updated reports clarified that four vessels capsized. Two of the boats were carrying passengers at the time of the incident, while the other two were not in service. The seven crew members on the unoccupied boats managed to escape safely.

Each of the two passenger boats had a capacity of approximately 40 people. Authorities have confirmed that the vessels were not overloaded when the storm hit, though the sudden intensity of the weather left little time for evasive action. Meteorological data confirmed the presence of severe localized weather conditions, including hail and strong gusts, which contributed to the rapid capsizing of the boats. Emergency response teams, including divers and paramedics, were dispatched to the site shortly after the incident.

Survivors were rescued from the water and treated for shock and minor injuries. Local government officials have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident and to assess whether weather warnings were in place or adequately communicated to boat operators. Authorities in Guizhou have issued reminders to all tourism operators in the region to closely monitor weather advisories and ensure safety protocols are followed, particularly during the seasonal transition when sudden storms are more frequent.

The Ministry of Emergency Management is overseeing ongoing operations and is expected to issue a full report once the search for the missing person concludes. The Wu River is a well-known destination for domestic tourism, especially during public holidays, which may have contributed to the number of tourists on the water at the time. This incident marks one of the deadliest boat accidents in China in recent years, underscoring the challenges of ensuring safety amid unpredictable weather patterns. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
