SPOKANE, WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – Three wildfires around Spokane have destroyed at least 700 structures, while officials placed about 67,000 people under evacuation orders. The Old Trails, Autumn Lane and Fairview fires have burned more than 8,000 acres since Saturday. Officials reported no deaths or major injuries as of Monday night. More than 1,000 firefighters continued attacking flames and protecting Spokane County neighborhoods. Fire managers ranked the cluster among the nation’s highest-priority wildfire responses.

Strong winds and dry vegetation drove the eastern Washington wildfires from open land into residential areas on Spokane’s northern edge. The Old Trails Fire crossed the Spokane River and reached northwest neighborhoods within hours of its ignition. Flames destroyed homes, businesses, vehicles and utility equipment across several communities. Infrared surveys flagged possible damage to hundreds of additional structures, but officials had not confirmed those losses. Smoke spread across Spokane and reduced visibility near active fire zones.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrested 37-year-old Aaron F. Farinacci on suspicion of first-degree arson Monday. Investigators linked the arrest only to the Old Trails Fire, which started near Old Trails Road and Euclid Avenue. A court will determine the charge, and the allegation does not establish guilt. Authorities continued investigating the causes of the Autumn Lane and Fairview fires. Officials announced no additional arrests in connection with the Spokane-area wildfires.

    Evacuations expand across Spokane County

Evacuation orders covered large sections of northern and northwestern Spokane, along with nearby communities across the county. Officials moved patients from the Mann-Grandstaff Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center during the expanding emergency. Spokane opened its convention center as a shelter for displaced residents and their pets. Community groups supplied food, water and other basic support. Local agencies also arranged emergency child care, road closures and public information services for affected families.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency and activated National Guard support as fires spread across eastern Washington. The declaration allowed agencies to coordinate personnel, equipment and emergency assistance across affected counties. A statewide burn ban remained in effect during severe heat and drought conditions. The state mobilized resources from several agencies and outside firefighting teams. Officials also requested federal emergency support as crews faced heavy demand across the Pacific Northwest.

Crews protect homes and critical infrastructure

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources joined local and federal teams managing the Spokane Complex response. Aircraft dropped retardant while ground crews used engines, hand lines and heavy equipment near threatened homes. Crews also protected roads, transmission lines, hospitals and water facilities. Fire managers reported no containment around the three Spokane-area fires on Monday. Road and park closures remained active, including restrictions at Riverside and Mount Spokane state parks.

The fires damaged power systems and left thousands of customers without electricity during the first days of the emergency. Utility crews restored service where conditions allowed, while emergency teams kept dangerous areas closed. Officials urged residents to follow evacuation notices and avoid launching drones near firefighting aircraft. Emergency managers maintained updated maps and alerts as fire boundaries changed. Damage teams continued surveying burned neighborhoods and verifying property losses before releasing more detailed totals.
